Minews: AI News Reader

Minews: AI News Reader interface overview

Live on the App Store. I designed it and built it with a partner: SwiftUI, Python, the OpenAI API, and Firebase, from the first wireframe to the App Store release.

Minews is my passion project. As a lifelong, dedicated news reader, I’ve always dreamed of creating the perfect news app. One that saves time, respects the reader, and makes it effortless to dig deeper into stories. For years, this vision felt out of reach. But with the rise of AI, I can finally bring it to life.

Minews aggregates articles from trusted publishers, detects when multiple sources cover the same event, and merges them into a single, well-structured “Spotlight.” AI then generates clear, concise summaries you can read in under three minutes, with the option to explore full articles or dive deeper using Article Intelligence, a built-in assistant for context, comparisons, and questions.

The result is a news reader shaped by mindful design, free from doomscrolling, hidden paywalls, and clickbait. It delivers a clean, human-centered reading experience that is both efficient and empowering.

Onboarding

Minews is an innovative app that introduces a new way of experiencing the news. Because the idea of grouping stories, generating AI-powered summaries, and offering mindful reading is still unfamiliar to many, onboarding plays an essential role. The app serves a wide demographic, from casual readers to dedicated news followers, so it is important to communicate its functionality clearly and simply.

The onboarding flow consists of four focused slides. Together they explain the context of today’s noisy news cycle, the need for technology that can organize it, the way AI distills thousands of articles into a smart feed, and the app’s mindful approach that puts well-being first.

Minews was also created as a partial replacement for social media. Millennials and Gen Z in particular struggle with fatigue and mental health issues caused by heavy use of platforms built on dark patterns. Instead of doomscrolling, notification overload, and engagement tricks, Minews offers a cleaner, healthier way to stay informed.

Configuration

After onboarding, users configure their personal Minews feed. This process is fully powered by AI, making setup quick and intuitive. Readers can choose from curated source bundles, which provide an easy starting point, or they can ask for specific feeds that match their exact interests.

Minews takes inspiration from the tradition of old-school newspapers. Instead of endless scrolling, the app delivers a fresh, personalized news mix once per day at the time chosen by the user. This ritual creates a sense of rhythm and intentionality around consuming news, rather than overwhelming readers with constant notifications.

Minews integrates with Google to save the configuration and to get the user’s first name and avatar. These details are later used on the home page, creating the feeling of a personal, made-for-you daily paper.

The Core Experience

The heart of Minews is the reading experience itself. Each day, users receive a fresh edition of their personalized feed, designed to feel like their own daily newspaper. Stories are aggregated from multiple trusted sources and combined into clear, structured articles that save time and reduce noise.

When a story is opened, Minews surfaces a concise AI-generated summary that can be read in under three minutes. Readers can then explore the full details, see which sources were used, and even ask follow-up questions directly through Article Intelligence. This transforms passive reading into an interactive experience where users can clarify, compare, or dig deeper into the topics that matter to them.

Minews is not only about delivering news, but about reshaping how news is consumed: efficient, personal, and intelligent.

Article Intelligence

Article Intelligence is more than a reading companion. It acts as an assistant that helps users customize and control Minews with natural language. Instead of navigating menus or toggling settings, readers can simply ask for what they want. Whether it is finding new sources, adjusting preferences, or changing how the feed is delivered, AI makes the process simple.

While Minews still provides classical configuration options for those who prefer them, the main focus from a UX perspective is on conversational interaction. This approach lowers friction, makes the app more approachable for a wide demographic, and reinforces the idea of Minews as a personal, AI-powered newspaper that adapts to its reader.

Where it stands

Minews shipped to the App Store in 2025 and keeps getting updates. The daily edition, Spotlight merging, and Article Intelligence are all live. Next is bringing the reading experience to iPad and the web.
